• Formerly known as the Student Partnership Program (SPP), the updated version is the Student Direct Stream (SDS).
• SDS is an administrative framework developed in collaboration between Canadian visa offices in India and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC).
• The goal of SDS is to expedite visa processing and streamline the documentation required for visa/study permit applications for a specific category of students admitted to select colleges and universities. All public colleges and universities fall under this category.
• The SDS process is exclusively open to Indian nationals.

Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC):

• According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada guidelines, students need $10,000 CAD per year, excluding tuition fees, to cover living expenses.
• This financial requirement can be fulfilled through the purchase of a participating GIC, and proof of tuition payment.
• Various Canadian financial institutions, including ICICI, Scotia Bank, HSBC, participate in this program.
• Once the student’s GIC is opened, funds can be transferred to their Canadian account using any bank in India where they hold an account.
• The Scotia bank Student GIC Program is one such option, and funds can be transferred to a Canadian account from an Indian bank where the student holds an account.
• Applications under the Student Partner Program must include a copy of the formal GIC document issued by Scotia Bank, and wire transfers or bank remittances are not accepted as proof of GIC purchase.

Effective June 1, 2014, new rules simplify the process for study permit holders to engage in off-campus work. Full-time students enrolled in an academic, professional, or vocational training program at a designated learning institution will now:

– Be eligible to work off campus without requiring a separate work permit.
– Have the flexibility to work off campus for up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks.
– Have the ability to commence off-campus work immediately without a six-month waiting period.

To work in Canada, it is essential to be registered and enrolled at the designated learning institution and obtain a Social Insurance Number from Service Canada.

Both you and your employer are responsible for ensuring that you meet the eligibility criteria for off-campus work without a work permit. Initiating off-campus work without meeting these requirements may result in enforcement action under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.

Co-op/Internship Program Work:

– Starting June 1, 2014, students can participate in a co-op or internship program if it is an integral component of an academic, vocational, or professional training program offered by a designated learning institution.
– A separate co-op work permit is required for participation in a co-op/internship program, distinct from the study permit.

Working After Graduation:

– For those aspiring to work in Canada post-graduation, applying for a work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program is necessary.
– The program enables students who have graduated from a designated Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience.
– After completing one year of education, students can apply for a one-year work permit.
– After completing two years of education, students become eligible for a work permit for up to three years.

Student Work Options in Canada:
